Power
Power is a STARZ original series with two seasons under its belt and a third on the way. It is an American drama series that follows New York City nightclub owner James St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick). St. Patrick, nicknamed Ghost, is also involved in large-scale drug networks and must lead a double life without getting caught. Created by Courtney Kemp Agboh, the show is produced by rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, who also appears in a recurring role.
Californication
This comedy-drama series ran from 2007-2014, and received multiple Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award nominations and wins. Hank Moody (David Duchovny) is the lead character in a superbly acted trio that also includes his best friend, Charlie Runkle (Evan Handler), and that character’s wife Marcy (Pamela Adlon). Hank is an alcoholic novelist who suffers from writer’s block, but tries to find happiness while offering support to his on-again, off-again lover and their daughter. The show includes plenty of dry humor and originality, which keeps it from becoming too heavy.
Ray Donovan
Crime series dramas have always been popular, so it is no surprise that Ray Donovan has found success. The show is popular with both viewers and critics, with three seasons complete and a fourth season in the works. The series follows Roy (Liev Schreiber), a “fixer” who works for a law firm and helps the rich and famous in Los Angeles, California avoid jail time. He arranges bribes and payoffs to keep his clients from behind bars. Unfortunately, the FBI gets involved and begins to try to shut down Ray and his associates.
Roy Donovan is known for its superb writing and acting, with dark humor and engrossing scenes designed to entertain. The show has been nominated for and won numerous awards, including Emmys, Golden Globes, and Critics’ Choice Television Awards.
Da Vinci’s Demons
Historical fiction is a much-beloved genre, and Da Vinci’s Demons is an excellent example of a historical fantasy series that viewers love. Tom Riley plays the lead role, a fictional account of the master painter’s early life. The three-season series includes political drama, relationship struggles, cults, and much more as da Vinci navigates the Italian Renaissance.
