Set in a dark noir time in 1938 Los Angeles when a grisly murder shocked the city, Detective Tiago Vega and his partner Lewis Michener get embroiled in an epic story deeply laden with the rich history of the city. From the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Starring Nathan Lane, Game of Thrones fame Natalie Dormer and Daniel Zovatto amongst an ensemble of actors, Penny Dreadful sheds light on the racial discrimination that existed in the ’90s. Horror within the context of history, human beings are capable of mass catastrophes, of hatred and violence that could have dire consequences and tear nations apart. The subplot that details the Nazi infiltration has been shown with utter frankness. The characters are connected in a conflict between the Mexican folklore deity, Santa Muerte, the caretaker of the dead and guide to the great beyond, and her spiritual sister, the demoness Magda (Natalie Dormer), who believes mankind is inherently evil and aims to prove her point with the different forms she takes through the course of the season.
“There will come a time when the world is ready for me, when nation will battle nation, when race will devour race, when brother will kill brother until not a soul is left. Are you ready?” is mouthed by the first supernatural existence Santa Muerte in the beginning of the series while Magda is hellbent on proving that men are foul beings capable of doing no good.
