Former teammates turned foes are gearing up to battle for the Welterweight Championship on the fateful day of Sunday February 14. The fight will be exclusively screened on STARZPLAY for the MENA audience at 3.30 am in Abu Dhabi and 2.30 am in Riyadh.
The undefeated current UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman won the welterweight title in March 2019, effortlessly fighting off then-champion Tyron Woodley. He followed up with successful title defences against top rivals Colby Covington and Masvidal. The Masvidal fight was Usman’s only bout of 2020 and drew some criticism then for being dull in his smothering grappling approach, even though he dominated Masvidal.
World Jiu Jitsu Champion, Gilbert Burns on the other hand is riding on a six-fight winning streak, including two wins early on in 2020 that cemented this position as a title contender. Following impressive wins over Jorge Masvidal, Colby Covington and Tyron Woodley, Usman finds himself tied with all-time great Georges St-Pierre for the longest winning streak in the 170-pound weight class at 12. He now attempts to retain his title by fighting it out with one of the most dangerous contenders there is!
Did you know? Usman and Burns were teammates at Sanford MMA in Florida, though Usman moved camp to Denver to train with Trevor Wittman ahead of their originally planned UFC 251 clash. This came after talks from both men about sharing a camp while agreeing that facing each other would be “awkward.”
Here’s their current track record:
